Do you know the joy of decluttering?

There is no question that getting rid of unnecessary stuff will make you feel better.  Clutter is a major contributor to lowering your vibration.

Stuff you don’t need that you are constantly having to store, put away or work around takes a lot of energy.

I had tried to clean out and organize for years.  I would make some progress, and feel better for a while, but things inevitably went back to being cluttered again.

Last year I read “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up”.

After working through Marie Kondo’s book, I am a huge advocate of her unique method!

Here are 3 things I learned specific to her process that made a big difference for me in my home, and my whole life.

You will create a new mindset related to your belongings:  deciding what you will keep, instead of what you will get rid of. Marie Kondo’s “all at once” method is what is so effective in getting results. In contrast, the “tackle one room at a time” or “do a little each day” philosophies don’t allow you to see the whole picture, or practice what you need to learn… To begin, you must create a new mindset towards your things, of joy and gratitude. You will keep what brings you joy, and let go with gratitude what doesn’t.

My bedroom, once all my clothing was gathered!

Sort everything by category, not by location. Categories are as follows: Clothing, books, papers, miscellany, mementos. Complete each category before moving to the next. This means when you start on clothing, collect all your clothing from every corner of the house. Pull out every piece of clothing, shoes, accessories, coats, etc. you own.
Hold each item in your hands and note if it “sparks joy”. If it does, it stays. If it doesn’t, it goes. (tip:  this can translate to every aspect of your life!) Gathering all items in a category so they are in view is important to getting a clear take on what you have. This simple distinction allows you to see everything you have, and eliminate duplication.
The actual process of going through everything you own;  focusing on it and asking yourself if it sparks joy strengthens your decision muscle. You practice over and over again while going through the process, so by the time you are finished, you have a clean home that you can maintain, and a new skill for evaluating anything new that comes in!

At first it’s really hard. It’s hard to tell if you feel “joy” or something else triggered by the item. Maybe it was once your favorite (nostalgia). Maybe someone you love gave it to you (guilt!). Maybe you think you’ll wear it again (I used to look great in it!). Maybe you hate to throw things away (being wasteful). Maybe you want it “just in case”…

Whatever the reason, if it doesn’t spark joy, it needs to go. It has served you, but now it’s time to set it out into the universe for its next purpose. It is important for energetic universal flow to set it free. Someone else may be able to use it, or if not, you don’t need to eat up your energy and space providing its eternal resting place. Thank it for its service, and send it on its way. *Note: be sure to only decide about your own things… getting family members on board (or working around them!) will be another blog topic. Similarly, once you have decided what YOU want to discard, take it away quickly, and don’t involve others in your decision.
Getting rid of clutter in your home will turn it into a nurturing space of serenity and inspiration.

Letting go of unneeded “stuff” clears out stagnant energy, and gives you freedom and peace. Once you have decluttered, you can put everything away. You have streamlined your possessions.  Everything is aligned with your joy, and raises your energy, rather than draining it.  Now that you have less stuff, you have a place for everything to go back to after it has been used. This sense of order brings great peace.

Clothing I kept, all in one place

When you have finished putting your house in order, you will feel lighter and your world will brighten. Because you have learned and practiced the skill of evaluating joy, you will be less likely to bring things into your home and life that you don’t need.

Go back and read this whole post again, substituting the idea of  choosing joy in your thoughts, beliefs, relationships, etc. and setting free those that don’t serve you anymore!
